Environment & Community
Transurban is in the business of developing and operating roads that connect communities. But our business goes well beyond delivering and operating the infrastructure. We also make it our business to connect with communities to understand local priorities first-hand so we can tailor transportation solutions that deliver benefits now and over the long term.
At Transurban, our services offer our customers better life quality, and our customers' support maintains and grows our company. These relationships are vitally important to our business. It's also part of the reason why Transurban is committed to sustainability.

We define sustainability as our commitment to understanding our impacts on society and the environment, and then doing something about them. Sustainability is not just a single theory in one segment of our business. It permeates every aspect of our company and our actions.
Our Communities
As operators of Pocahontas 895 we strive to be a good neighbor. We seek to understand how our business affects the local community and the environment, and how we positively can contribute to the local community.
By actively engaging with our local community we hope to earn community trust, minimize risk and help to create a more livable community in the Richmond area.
Transurban's Community Relations Principles
- Common ground - We will find common ground with the communities in which we operate.
- Long-term partnerships - We are committed to the communities in which we operate for the long term.
- Community trust - We aim to earn the trust of the communities in which we operate.
- Transparency and accountability - We are committed to transparency and accountability in our engagement with the community.
Our Customers
We deliver a service traditionally provided by the public sector, and we understand that with that right comes a responsibility to deliver the highest standards of service and value to our customers.
Our customers expect high standards of responsiveness, transparency and fairness, and we make it our business to meet or exceed those expectations.
Safety is a high priority when it comes to customers. Transurban aims to provide a safe driving environment by designing and maintaining its roads to the highest safety standards and responding quickly to any on-road incidents. We also seek to sponsor initiatives that highlight and help educate the community about safe driving.
Our Environment
Transurban recognizes our responsibility in protecting the environment surrounding our roads. We value solutions that:
- Minimize resources and noise
- Improve air and water quality
- Protect local habitats
- Provide features like parklands, shared pathways and wetlands
We currently are conducting an environmental review of Pocahontas 895's local environmental impacts and developing a framework to help us manage these impacts.
We also are investigating opportunities to develop local environmental programs to contribute to the environmental health and sustainability of the area surrounding our road.
Our People
Our people - whether toll collectors or maintenance professionals - play a vital role in ensuring that we live up to our community relations principles.
Individually, we strive to attract and retain employees who exhibit the same set of core values that are the foundation of our company:
- Relationship-driven
- Solution-driven
